Why Support the Library?

A library is not only a place that preserves rare editions which trace the cultural history of the Western world — it is a factory, where the intellectual, accompanied by books alone, prepares to make his or her contribution to their national culture. From the first establishment of a library system in 1253 by Marinus II, who regulated the possession and consultation of books and archival materials, to Edoardo Baroncini in 1693, who reorganized and promoted the collections, the library culture of Camaldoli has developed as a research tool which, in the Camaldolese tradition, encompasses all spheres of human knowledge — from Letters to Sciences, from Archaeology to Geography, from Economics to Medicine.
The Historical Library and Archives of Camaldoli, constructed with the support of Ranuccio Farnese in 1622, today contain texts and documents which not only illuminate the history of a thousand year old congregation (1012-2012), but which also encompass the entire history of Western culture.
